USB Connector Types: A Quick Visual Guide to What that End is Called

Identify many USB ports and cable types at a glance

Published on by Katie B β€’ 2 min read

What are the names of the USB connectors?

Which end is it? I have an image here that took me way longer to put together than I'd like to admit. Although, I'm pleased to say I knew where all the connectors were.

The one that feels the most common at the moment is the USB-C end. That's one that most phones now use for charging and data transfer. It's also used in many tablets and USB-charge items. I still have a couple lanterns and a set of headphones that use the micro-USB plug though.

I love things that charge via USB because I don't have to fiddle with batteries.

Typically, the ends are called A, B, C, mini, or micro.

USB-B for your printer

If you want a printer cable, search for USB type B. Make sure it's not "mini" or "micro" if you're looking for a printer cable. That is, unless your printer has that type. Most printers will have the regular "big" one.

You can get a USB-A end or a USB-C end like I have to plug into my computer.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between USB-A and USB-C?

USB-A is the rectangular, traditional USB connector found on computers and chargers. It's larger and has to plug in one way. USB-C is smaller, reversible, and supports faster data transfer and charging speeds.

Can I use a USB-C cable in a USB-A port?

No. they have different physical shapes. You'll need an adapter or a cable with USB-C on one end and USB-A on the other.

Which USB type charges modern smartphones?

Most modern smartphones use USB-C. Older phones may still use Micro-USB. Older iPhones use the 'lightning' charger, but from what I understand, newer ones use USB-C.
